As summer winds down, it is time to think about fall fundraisers, holiday parties and other events your Post hosts. As always, your Post should assess the risks of every event and implement safety measures when possible.
Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls
As one of the leading industry incidents, slips, trips and falls can be costly for your Post. Follow these tips to prevent anyone from getting hurt at your event.
- Clean up all spills right away and place caution signs around the area to draw attention.
- Have proper lighting in all areas so members can see where they are walking.
- Do not run extension cords along walkways.
- Clearly mark steps and changes in elevation with bright colored paint and reflective tape.
- Repair uneven sidewalks, loose gravel, potholes and other hazards.
- Install sturdy, secure handrails along steps, ramps or sloping surfaces.
Serve Alcohol with Caution
Have all of your servers get state-certified in proper and responsible alcohol serving with training. This course will teach state-specific serving laws and responsible serving techniques.
As your members and guests leave your gathering, always encourage safe driving. Don’t allow anyone to drink and drive, and always encourage the use of seat belts.
Plan for Everything
From to parking accommodations to weather safety, a well-planned event can make things more enjoyable and safer for guests.
Well marked and organized parking lots can minimize fender benders and reduce guest frustration. Never authorize parking that blocks roads, always comply with local ordinances and receive proper permits when necessary.
Have a severe weather plan in place in the event of unfavorable weather, just is case.

Policy coverage forms and rates may not be subject to regulation by the insurance department of your state of residence. Excess/surplus lines insurers do not generally participate in state guaranty funds and therefore insureds are not protected by such funds in the event of the insurer’s insolvency.
